Temporary basting spray
What Odif 505 holds, where to spray it, and what to check before using it on your project.
Temporary hold, then stitching
Odif describes 505 as an adhesive for holding layers during quilting, sewing and machine embroidery. Treat it as a way to position your work, rather than a permanent fabric glue.
Read your can first. Odif warns that the aerosol is extremely flammable, its vapors may cause flash fire, and its contents are under pressure. Keep it away from children and follow the label's safety directions.
Current Odif 505 product directionsWhere does the spray go?
The manufacturer gives different surfaces for its two main uses. These notes describe the aerosol.
- Quilt sandwich
- Protect the work surface and shake the can. Odif specifies a 10-inch spray distance, applying to the batting before positioning the quilt top. Turn the work over, then apply to the batting for the backing.
- Machine embroidery
- Odif directs you to hoop the stabilizer, spray that stabilizer, and position the fabric or garment on it without hooping the fabric.
Keep the exact product instructions with your supplies. A direction for one adhesive is not a direction for every spray or every fabric.
Check stretch and nap on minky
Shannon Fabrics lists 505 spray among the notions in its minky sewing advice. Its guide also recommends double pinning to reduce stretch and describes minky as a knit fabric with pile and nap. Adhesive is one part of preparation; it does not replace checking the direction of the fabric or supporting its layers.
Use a spare piece to check your planned fabric, layers and seam before working on the project. For Cuddle fabrics, read Shannon's full minky guide for the fabric-specific advice.
